June is one of my favorite times of year in Estonia. Besides the fact that it is the height of springtime and the countryside is alive with natural activity, there is also constant light because of the high lattitude. There is a unique form of light that exists in the short period of “night” where the sun dips below the horizon for a few short hours. During these few hours the quality of light changes constantly but in an ever subtle manner. This is most evident when experienced near a large body of water. In the case of these photos it was on the shore of the Peipsi Lake, on the eastern edge of Estonia that borders Russia.

these photographs are wonderful, I’d love to see that one day in real, such light ‘in the small hours’.
