sound workshop in Kiel
From January 23rd to 29th I gave a workshop for Art Pedagogy students in Kiel. The theme was based around ’sound installation’ yet we went through many of the basics of the behavior and properties of sound as well as perception and social aspects of sound. I want to thank Pipe Lange for organizing this [...]

Istanbul soundwalks
On a recent visit to Istanbul I recorded several ’soundwalks’ through the cityscape. The recordings were made with a discreet pair of self-made binaural mics (panasonic wm-61a capsules) on a Sony PCM-D50. What becomes clear is that moving through space (as opposed to a stationary recording position) reveals just how diverse the spaces are in [...]

formica aquilonia
Formica aquilonia or Red Wood Ant is a species of ant commonly found in the area where I live. The ant colonies are easily recognizable by the large mounds that they build out of debris from the pine forests they inhabit. The mounds also tend to be clustered together. I’m not sure what is the [...]

subterranean soviet silos
I finally managed to visit a curious location in a forest in south Estonia and discovered that it indeed was one of the former soviet nuclear missile silos. As I’ve seen, most missile bases were mobile launching pads for missiles that were stored on trucks in bunkers. In this location the missiles were actually stored [...]

hay room improvisation
Last week MoKS hosted Klima, a 5 day performance event conducted by polymedia artist Mike Hentz. Apart from numerous actions, excursions and exercises there was a good deal of attention on working with sound. Mike requested the unrenovated part of MoKS be used somehow so we decided to fill it with hay. Hay is of [...]

urban exploring: riga power station
While visiting Riga this past weekend we were able to gain access (officially) to the old power station in Riga. The power station, which generated heat for the city, ceased operations in 2003 and is slowly undergoing a process of transformation, yet the building and many old artifacts remain. There are plans to convert the [...]

hydrophone recording #2
This is a great hydrophone recording I made last week in the local Mooste lake. The sun was shining brightly so the plants were giving off plenty of oxygen. There are also a number of sqeaks and buzzes I cannot yet identify. The hydrophone is made by the avid field recordist Jez riley French who [...]

stazione topolo 1999
more archive material… this time from my first visit to the Stazione Topolo festival 1999, in Friuli Italy, just over the border from Slovenia. I developed and presented the first edition of the Resonance Ensemble project. This is a recording of the installation I made using local ceramic roof tiles (’stresniki’ in slovene).
Please [...]
