This years MoKS Nature Sound Recording Workshop took place on August 4th-5th. The theme for this years workshop was ‘insects’. By early August much of the wildlife sound in Estonia has settled down except for the grasshoppers and bush crickets which form the common base of the afternoon and early evening soundscape. For two days we investigated the local environment around the village of Mooste listening for various insect sounds.
Special thanks to Veljo Runnel for leading this workshop: soundcloud.com/estlander
and to MoKS for hosting the workshop: moks.ee
Below is a video compiled from sounds and images collected during the workshop. The locations include a compost box, ant hill and orchard.
The first workshop was held at MoKS in 2011.

Hi John, Loving this work.
Do you know what microphone and pre-amp was used to record the low SPL sounds, such as the insects in the compost heap?
I have tried to get similar results using your DIY contact mics.
Thanks
Louis
Hi Louis, thanks for your comment.
The insects in the compost heap were recorded with my DIY contact microphones that ran directly into a Sony PCM-D50.
